To access the red-flag exit, the player must reach a platform containing a yellow Warp Pipe near the last Spin Block, which is most easily done by using the Spin Block and then bouncing off the nearby Koopa Troopa. The pole for the normal exit is accessed via the use of a green pipe near the end of the stage, located directly below a yellow one. By using the Spin Blocks, the player can gain access to many coins that hover in the sky. The player must traverse across many platforms and utilize several Spin Blocks to proceed through the level. Mario must either go around Bowser and hit the switch, which collapses the bridge, or defeat him with fireballs. The fight is very similar to the ones from Super Mario Bros., as the fight takes place on a small bridge above a pit of lava, with a skull switch (which replaces the axe from Super Mario Bros.) at one end. The boss door at the end of the area leads to Bowser, the boss of the first world. Before making it to the boss's door, Mario can jump on the last tightrope to find a hidden Warp Pipe to get to a room with the final Star Coin. The second Star Coin can be found on a moving platform that sinks into lava. Mario then must get through a second lava-filled area. The first Star Coin can be found in one of the gaps, and Mario must Wall Jump to reach it. Mario must wait in the gaps between the spiked ceilings to avoid getting crushed.
